Paediatric Surgeon Dr Efthymios Tsivitanides served as Senior Medical Officer, Assistant Director, and Acting Director at the Paediatric Surgery Clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, where he worked from 1995 until his retirement on 30 June 2023.

He graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1984. He served for one year (1984-1985) as a General Practitioner at the Health Station of Kastanea, Karditsa, and subsequently for another year as an Internal Assistant in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Clinic of Athens. He specialised in General Surgery at The General State Hospital of Athens (1986–1989) and in Paediatric Surgery at “The Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital in Athens (1989-1993).

He completed his doctoral thesis at the Medical School of the University of Athens (1991-1994) on the topic: “The use of lyophilised dura mater in the recurrence of tracheo-oesophageal fistula in children with oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula”. He also received further training in neonatal anorectal malformations and endoscopy in children at the University Paediatric Surgery Clinic of Münster, Germany (January-April 1990).

With a Fulbright Foundation scholarship, in collaboration with Harvard Medical International, he received further training in thoracic surgery for neonates and infants at the Paediatric Surgery Clinic of Children’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts (May-June 2003).

He has performed a vast number of surgical procedures of varying complexity in children (over 17,000 cases to date) and has a particular interest in neonatal surgery, as well as in the surgical treatment of hypospadias and other congenital urinary tract anomalies, and in the management of infantile haemangiomas.

He has participated in numerous international and local medical conferences, where he has delivered lectures and presented scientific papers. He has also shown a strong commitment to the training of medical residents and to the education of medical students from various universities.

Dr Efthymios Tsivitanidis is a member of the Board of Directors of the State Health Services Organisation (ΟΚΥπΥ) and simultaneously practises paediatric surgery privately within the General Healthcare System (GHS).
